Note on the name “cleanMat”: The name originates from an earlier floor-mat project patented by me at the time and the email address used then. It has no substantive or technical connection with the fire retardant presented here and does not describe either its composition or its mode of action.
02 · Market challenge
The hidden challenge of persistent smouldering
Manufacturers of wood-fibre and cellulose insulation materials commonly use fire retardants to reduce rapid ignition and flame spread. Under severe thermal exposure, however, visible flames may disappear while the material continues to smoulder internally. This concealed process can continue until the material is extensively damaged or completely consumed.
This difficult-to-detect fire behaviour is an important challenge in the further development of natural-fibre insulation materials for multi-storey construction. Addressing persistent smouldering may therefore be particularly relevant to manufacturers pursuing product development and potential qualification for higher German building classes, including GK 4 and GK 5. Any such classification remains subject to the applicable product-specific testing and approval procedures.

Two inventions with distinct industrial applications
INVENTION 1 · CORE TECHNOLOGY
Wood-fibre, cellulose and hemp insulation materials
The core invention is directed primarily at the insulation materials industry and is designed to suppress smouldering and afterglow. The underlying technology may also be applicable in other fields, including flame-retarded plastics.
INVENTION 2 · EXTENDED APPLICATIONS
Paper, cardboard packaging, wood and wood-based materials
The second invention extends the technology to a broader range of industrial materials, including cardboard packaging, paper, wood chips, plywood, MDF and chipboard.
In brief: When exposed to heat, the technology forms a protective barrier intended to reduce heat transfer and fire propagation while suppressing smouldering and afterglow. The precise composition and technical formulation remain confidential.
The technology is intended to be integrated into existing industrial manufacturing processes. Testing, classification and regulatory approval remain product-specific and must be carried out for the respective manufacturer and end product in accordance with the applicable standards.
